This section provides specific information on property taxation in the various counties in Georgia. Information is provided on the topics listed below. Every effort has been made to include information based on the laws passed by the Georgia Assembly during the previous session. Taxpayers that have questions about the information presented on these pages should contact their local tax officials for verification and clarification.

FILE FOR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION YEAR ROUND

A homeowner can file an application for homestead exemption for their home and land any time during the calendar year. To receive the homestead exemption for the current tax year, the homeowner must have owned the property on January 1 and filed the homestead application by March 1. Homestead applications that are filed after March 1 will not be granted until the next calendar year. (O.C.G.A. ยง 48-5-45).

  • Counties with Property Records Online
    This is a list of counties with property records online. If the county is not on this list, taxpayers should contact the Board of Tax Assessors in the county for information on researching property records.
  • County Tax Officials Mailing List
    This list has the names, addresses and phone numbers of the following county officials:  Chairman of the Board of Commissioners, County Tax Commissioner, Chairman of the Board of Tax Assessors, Chief Appraiser, and Clerk of Superior Court. (A PDF document)
  • County Tax Rates in Each Taxing Jurisdiction
    This report has the actual millage rates for each taxing jurisdiction (state, county incorporated, county unincorporated, school, city, and other special taxing districts).
  • Duties of County Tax Officials
    The main duty of the County Tax Commissioner is to collect ad valorem tax in the county for the State of Georgia, the county governing authority, and the school system.  And the main duty of the County Board of Tax Assessors is to assure that all personal property and all real property have been returned for taxation at the proper valuation.  But other duties may vary between these two offices depending upon the county.
