MOTOR VEHICLE DIVISION | Millage Rate Manual for 2008 Motor Vehicles and 2007 Real and Personal Property | |
The 2008 motor vehicle millage rates on this page should be the same rates that were set by local governments to be applied to real and personal property in 2007. While every effort has been made to assure the accuracy of these rates, taxpayers should contact the County Tax Commissioner's office for verification.
By law in Georgia, the tax rate applied to real and personal property appearing on the tax digests one year is the same rate applied in the following year against motor vehicles, mobile homes (that do not qualify for a homestead exemption) and harvested or sold timber. One mill produces $1.00 tax for every $1,000 worth of property value. A mill may be expressed as .001 in decimal format. Vehicles are assessed in Georgia at 40% of the valuation set by the Commissioner. Example: A vehicle with a valuation of $20,000 on January 1, 2008, would be taxed in a city which has a 2007 motor vehicle millage rate of 30.00 mills, as follows: $20,000 * 40% = $8,000 assessment $8,000 * .03000 = $240.00 ad valorem tax |
